Spinel comes in a wide range of colours, including Red, Pink, Blue, Violet, Purple, Orange, and even Grey or Black. Red Spinel, often resembling ruby, is highly prized for its vibrant hue. The colour of spinel is attributed to trace elements: Chromium creates the beautiful Red and Pink shades, while Iron contributes to the Blue, Violet, and Grey colors. Cobalt Spinel is particularly notable for its rare and vivid bright blue appearance. Among the noteworthy varieties, Red Spinel is considered the most valuable and is frequently mistaken for ruby, while Blue Spinel can occur due to the presence of iron or cobalt. Cobalt Spinel stands out as a rare gem, showcasing a bright, vivid blue hue. Additionally, there is the rare Color Change Spinel, which uniquely shifts from blue to purple, and Star Spinel, which displays asterism because of rutile inclusions.
