Zircon is a natural gemstone known for its high brilliance, strong fire, and range of colors. It is not to be confused with cubic zirconia, a synthetic diamond simulant. It is one of the oldest minerals on Earth, forming under a variety of geological conditions. It is commonly found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, and is known for its durability, high refractive index.
Natural zircon is often heat-treated in many colors to enhance or change its appearance.
MAIN COLOUR VARIETIES OF ZIRCON:
Colorless (White) Zircon --> Resembles diamond due to its brilliance; often produced by heating brown zircon
Blue Zircon --> The most popular variety; created by heat-treating brown zircon, vibrant sky blue or teal
Red Zircon --> Very rare and highly valued; rich reddish-brown or deep red tones
Golden / Honey Zircon --> Warm yellow, orange, or brown hues; usually not treated
Green Zircon --> Rare in nature; may be treated or natural; often has inclusions
Pink Zircon --> Delicate pink to rose hues; rare and beautiful
Brown Zircon --> Common in nature; often the starting material for heat treatment to make blue or colourless zircon
HEAT-TREATED VS NATURAL ZIRCON:
--> Blue and colourless zircons are almost always heat-treated to improve clarity and colour.
--> Natural colours like golden, red, and some green varieties are typically untreated.
--> Heat treatment is stable and widely accepted in the gem trade, but should be disclosed.
OPTICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
--> High refractive index: Gives zircon its diamond-like sparkle
--> Zircon may show pleochroism, especially in coloured varieties
--> Hardness: 6–7.5 on the Mohs scale
Notable Sources: Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar (Burma), Tanzania, Vietnam & Australia
White Zircon is a naturally occurring gemstone known for its exceptional brilliance, fire, and high dispersion, often resembling diamonds. Despite the similar name, zircon is unrelated to cubic zirconia.
Key Facts:
--> Colourless (white), though it may have slight tints
--> Transparent
--> Adamantine Luster (brilliant, like diamond)
--> Often heat-treated to enhance clarity and whiteness
--> Known for its double refraction, giving it a sparkling appearance
Blue Zircon is a natural gemstone renowned for its vivid blue colour, brilliant sparkle, and diamond-like fire. Often confused with synthetic stones due to its brilliance, blue zircon is 100% natural (though usually heat-treated), and one of the oldest minerals on Earth.
Key Facts:
--> Colour Light to deep blue (often sky or teal blue)
--> Transparent
--> Adamantine Luster (brilliant and reflective)
--> Usually heat-treated to achieve or enhance the blue colour
--> Double refraction creates intense brilliance and fire
Orange Zircon is a radiant gemstone prized for its warm orange to reddish-orange hues and exceptional brilliance. Less common than its blue counterpart, orange zircon showcases the stone’s natural fire and charm, often resembling the glow of autumn sunsets.
Key Facts:
--> Colour orange to reddish-orange, golden-orange
--> Transparency: Transparent
--> Adamantine Luster (high brilliance)
--> Typically, natural or heat-treated to improve colour and clarity
--> Known for its strong fire, double refraction, and sparkle
Yellow Zircon is a radiant gemstone known for its golden to lemon-yellow hues and brilliant sparkle. Its high dispersion and fire make it an eye-catching alternative to yellow sapphire or citrine.
Key Facts:
--> Colour Pale yellow to rich golden-yellow
--> Transparent
--> Adamantine Luster (diamond-like brilliance)
--> Often heat-treated to improve colour and clarity
--> Strong fire and brilliance, with noticeable double refraction
Green Zircon is a rare and eye-catching gemstone featuring subtle to vivid green hues, often with a slightly earthy or olive tone. While not as well-known as blue or white zircon
Key Facts:
--> Colour Pale mint, yellowish-green, to olive green
--> Transparent
--> Adamantine Luster (brilliant sparkle)
--> Typically, untreated or minimally enhanced
--> Strong double refraction gives extra sparkle
Red Zircon is a rare and captivating gemstone known for its deep red to reddish-brown hues and diamond-like brilliance. Among the most valued zircon colours, often likened to garnet but with superior fire and luster.
Key Facts:
--> Colour Deep red, reddish-brown, brick red
--> Transparent
--> Adamantine Luster (bright, diamond-like)
--> Usually natural or lightly heat-treated
--> Exhibits strong double refraction, giving added brilliance
