GEMSTONE SPECIES - INORGANIC

SPODUMENE

Spodumene is an allochromatic mineral composed of lithium aluminium inosilicate. It’s best known as both an important industrial ore of lithium and a gemstone when found in transparent, well-coloured crystals.
Spodumene is naturally colourless in its pure form, but gains colour due to trace elements.s

VARIETIES:
1. Kunzite
Colour --> Pink to lilac
Trace element --> Manganese
2. Hiddenite
Colour --> Green
Trace element --> Chromium

3. Triphane
--> yellow to colourless

OCCURRENCE:
Typically forms in lithium-rich pegmatites
Sources include:
Afghanistan
Brazil
Madagascar
United States (California, North Carolina)

SPODUMENE VARIETIES

Kunzite (lilac)

Hiddenite (green)

Hiddenite (green)

Kunzite is a delicate, romantic gemstone from the spodumene mineral family, known for its soft lilac to pinkish-violet hues. Its beautiful colour is due to traces of manganese, and it is prized for its transparency and pleochroism, which shows different shades when viewed from different angles.
Key Facts:
Colour --> Lilac, pink to violet-pink
Transparency --> Transparent to translucent
Luster --> Vitreous
Treatment:
Usually heat-treated to enhance or stabilise colour

( Sensitive to light and heat, colour may fade over time)

Hiddenite (green)

Hiddenite (green)

Hiddenite (green)

Hiddenite is the green variety of spodumene, prized for its delicate to vibrant yellow-green to emerald-green hues, caused by the presence of chromium. It is rarer than kunzite and admired for its brilliance, clarity, and soft yet vivid colour.
Key Facts:
Colour --> Yellow-green to emerald green
Transparency --> Transparent to translucent
Luster --> Vitreous
Treatment:
Usually untreated, though some may be enhanced

(Can be light-sensitive (may fade with prolonged sunlight exposure)

Triphane (yellow)

Hiddenite (green)

Triphane (yellow)

Triphane is the yellow to pale golden variety of spodumene, known for its soft, luminous colour and exceptional clarity. It ranges from pale lemon to deep honey-yellow, and although less known than kunzite and hiddenite, it is valued for its gentle beauty and brilliance.
Key Facts:
Colour --> Pale yellow to golden yellow
Transparency --> Transparent to translucent
Luster --> Vitreous
Treatment:
Often untreated, though occasionally heat-treated for clarity
(Rare in jewelry due to cleavage sensitivity (can split easily if struck))
