GEMSTONE SPECIES - INORGANIC

Find out more

SPODUMENE

Spodumene is an allochromatic mineral composed of lithium aluminium inosilicate. It is best known for its significance as both an important industrial ore of lithium and a stunning gemstone, particularly when it appears as transparent, well-coloured crystals. In its pure form, spodumene is naturally colourless, but it acquires vibrant hues due to trace elements. The popular varieties of spodumene include kunzite, which showcases lovely pink to lilac shades influenced by manganese, and hiddenite, celebrated for its striking green tint caused by chromium. Additionally, there is triphane, which can range from yellow to colourless. Spodumene typically forms in lithium-rich pegmatites, and notable sources include Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, and various locations in the United States, including California and North Carolina.

SPODUMENE VARIETIES

Kunzite (lilac)

Hiddenite (green)

Hiddenite (green)

A rectangular pink gemstone with its reflection on black surface.

Kunzite, a delicate and romantic gemstone from the spodumene mineral family, is celebrated for its enchanting soft lilac to pinkish-violet hues. This beautiful color is attributed to traces of manganese, and kunzite is especially valued for its transparency and unique pleochroism, which reveals different shades when observed from various angles. Interestingly, hiddenite, another member of the spodumene family, contrasts with kunzite in its own captivating colors. Key facts about kunzite include: Color --> Lilac, pink to violet-pink; Transparency --> Transparent to translucent; Luster --> Vitreous. Kunzite is typically heat-treated to enhance or stabilize its color, but it is sensitive to light and heat, meaning its vibrant hues may fade over time. The related mineral triphane also shares similarities with kunzite and hiddenite, making the spodumene family a fascinating subject for gemstone enthusiasts.

Hiddenite (green)

Rectangular cut light blue gemstone with reflection.

Hiddenite, a stunning green variety of spodumene, showcases delicate to vibrant yellow-green and emerald-green hues, which are primarily due to the presence of chromium. This gem is rarer than kunzite and is highly valued for its clarity, brilliance, and captivating colors. Key Facts: Colour --> Yellow-green to emerald green, Transparency --> Transparent to translucent, Luster --> Vitreous. Treatment: Typically untreated, although some may be enhanced. Note: Hiddenite can be light-sensitive and may fade with prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Triphane (yellow)

Hiddenite (green)

Triphane (yellow)

Rectangular clear gemstone with reflection on black surface.

Triphane, a variety of spodumene, features a beautiful yellow to pale golden hue that captivates with its soft, luminous color and exceptional clarity. Its shades can range from pale lemon to deep honey-yellow. Although it is less widely recognized than its more popular cousins, kunzite and hiddenite, triphane is cherished for its gentle beauty and brilliant appearance.

Key Facts:

Colour --> Pale yellow to golden yellow

Transparency --> Transparent to translucent

Luster --> Vitreous

Treatment:

Often untreated, triphane may occasionally undergo heat treatment to enhance clarity, though it is rare in jewelry due to its sensitivity to cleavage, which can lead to splitting if struck.
